The Bible is a compilation of religious texts considered sacred in Christianity, Judaism, Samaritanism, and various other religions. It comprises a diverse range of content, including instructions, stories, poetry, and prophecies. The texts were originally penned in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek. The selection of materials acknowledged as part of the Bible by a specific religious group is known as the biblical canon. Adherents generally view the Bible as a product of divine inspiration but interpret its contents in multiple ways.
These religious texts were gathered and organized into official collections by different religious communities. The earliest compilation contains the initial five books of the Bible, known as the Torah in Hebrew and the Pentateuch in Greek. Following this are narrative histories and prophecies (the Nevi'im) and a collection of psalms, proverbs, and narratives (the Ketuvim). The term Tanakh refers to the Hebrew Bible, derived from the initials of its three sections: the Torah ("Teaching"), the Nevi'im ("Prophets"), and the Ketuvim ("Writings"). The Masoretic Text is a medieval version of the Tanakh in Hebrew and Aramaic that holds authoritative status within modern Rabbinic Judaism. Additionally, the Septuagint serves as a Koine Greek translation of the Tanakh from the third and second centuries BCE, largely aligning with the Hebrew Bible.
Christianity emerged from Judaism and initially adopted the Septuagint as the foundation for the Old Testament. Early Christian traditions continued the practice of composing and integrating religious texts deemed inspired and authoritative. The gospels, Pauline epistles, and other writings eventually formed the New Testament.
Having sold an estimated total exceeding five billion copies, the Bible stands as one of the highest-selling publications globally. Its impact extends significantly to Western culture and history while influencing diverse cultures worldwide. The scholarly exploration of biblical criticism has also indirectly shaped cultural development. Presently, efforts are underway to translate the Bible into approximately half of the world's languages.
